Admissions Process

The application process for pupils hoping to join Birkenhead School is detailed below. We aim to make the process transparent and simple, whilst retaining our commitment to academic excellence and the application of a fair admissions policy.

The following table sets out the general process of admissions, and applies to prospective pupils looking to enter Prep, Seniors and Sixth Form. Admissions to Nursery are slightly different, although some stages of the process detailed on this page do apply.  For further information, please visit Admission to Nursery.

Initial Enquiry

Enquires for admission can be made at any stage of the year. Parents are invited to visit School or join us on one of our Open Events (April and September).

To make an enquiry or request an application form please contact the Admissions Team: 


Nurserywe invite you and your child to visit Nursery to meet the Nursery Manager.  There is no formal assessment.

Pre-Prepwe invite children to visit us and, during the visit, we observe your child at play.  There is no formal assessment.

Prepon receipt of an application form, children will be invited to attend a Taster Day. The Taster Days are enjoyable and tailored to the child.  They will have an opportunity to experience our School and meet other pupils. During the day there will be opportunity to undertake assessments in Mathematics, English, Reading and Spelling.  





Seniors and Sixth Formon receipt of an application form, pupils will be invited to attend an Assessment and Taster Day.

Pupils will have an opportunity to experience subjects, meet students and experience School life.  During the day there will be opportunity for an assessment of their skills in Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics.









In Seniors, applications for assessment can be made either at the end of Year 5 or the beginning of Year 6.  Assessments take place in January and June.







Sixth Form: 
In the Sixth Form, students are invited to attend an interview with the Headmaster following their Taster Day.


Reservation of Places

We will make an offer to pupils who we feel have the ability or clear potential to excel on our broad curriculum and play a full and active role within the School community.




Once an offer has been accepted, families are asked to complete the reservation form and pay the reservation fee of £300 (refunded to parents on completion of their child's education).



Offers for Senior places should be accepted as follows:


  • June Assessment Offers: To be accepted no later than 1st September
  • January Assessment Offers: To be accepted no later than 1st March

Scholarships and Bursaries

Parents of any child aged 11+ who have been offered and have accepted a place for entry may apply for one of our Academic Scholarships. Academic Scholarships are awarded based on the result of a Scholarship Examination.

Parents of any child aged 7+ may apply for a bursary.



Bursaries are means-tested and vary in size dependent on family circumstances. Full information is available on our Scholarships and Bursaries page.

Confirmation of Place

Following the reservation of your place, the Bursar will issue contracts and further information.  Completed contracts should be returned within two weeks.

In our experience, it is in the best interests of children to know which school they are going to well in advance. We encourage parents to make a firm decision early on to assist children in their transition between the stages in their education.
