Dr Morton, an Old Birkonian, talked to Years 12 and 13 about his career path and the unlikely circumstances that led his work across the world, in a lecture entitled, ‘Birkenhead, Bermuda, Beijing, Bangkok’.

The description of his experiences with foreign cultures and the dispelling of many common myths surrounding China was nothing short of fascinating and really portrayed the breadth of topics covered in the lecture series.

Dr Morton, a Gynecologist and Obstetrician, started his presentation with the astounding fact that in his long career he has delivered over 8,000 babies! He stressed the fact that after studying medicine at Liverpool University, he had no burning desire to travel and work abroad. However, as Dr Morton put it, “life happens” and one day, due to heavy traffic preventing him from crossing a road, he went on to meet a man whose brother was working out in Bermuda and a mere six months later, Dr Morton joined him. Following this, he discussed his move to Canada and becoming a Canadian citizen, working there until 1997 until his hospital closed.

His ensuing account of his works in Asia and explanation of, especially Chinese, culture and customs was enlightening. It was obvious to see his admiration of the strong loyalty shown to both family members and work colleagues and Dr Morton suggested that such traits would be well received in Western culture as well.

This lecture, along with being a fascinating description and explanation of Chinese culture, was a powerful reminder that in life anything can happen and that even events that appear negative in the short term can offer merit in the future. This message, offered by a man of such experience, was definitely appreciated by everyone listening and on behalf of the Sixth Form I would like to thank Mr Michael Morton for his lecture entitled ‘Birkenhead, Bermuda, Beijing, Bangkok’.
