Partnership with Parents

Working in partnership with parents is paramount to children’s learning and development. 


As practitioners, we see how children play and develop within the Nursery, but as a parent you will ultimately know your child best.  

We look to work collaboratively with you so that we can care and support your son or daughter whilst they are with us.  

Key Person
The Key Person is the member of the Nursery team who will work closely with your child and will have a unique understanding of what your child’s current interests and needs are.  They will share with you what your child has been doing during the day and listen to what they have been doing at home so that they are able to build on their learning and development.  

A child’s time in the Nursery should be a memorable journey not just for them but for parents too.  The Key Person will capture your child’s learning and feedback to you informally at the beginning or the end of the day, as well as updating your child’s learning journal with artwork, photographs and observations of them at play.  Engaging with your child’s Key Person can often produce useful information about new interests or experiences that can be used to play exciting and challenging learning opportunities either at Nursery or ideas for you to do at home with your child.
 
Settling in Visits

Prior to your child starting you are invited to visit the Nursery help them become familiar with the setting and to help them settle in.  During this process you will be shown around the Nursery and have an opportunity to meet the wider Nursery team.  The number of visits can depend on a child’s individual needs and we work closely with you to ensure that everyone feels comfortable during this time.

The Under 2s Home Link Diary

Your child’s key person will record your child’s daily play experiences and routines in a diary. It is intended that this diary will be tailored to your family’s individual needs. To achieve this, your child’s key person will discuss with you the information you would like to be recorded each day. 

Learning Journals

In support of the Early Years Foundation Stage, your child’s key person will compile a learning journal that will consist of observations and photographs of them at play.  

Every four months, a summative assessment will be completed that will celebrate your child’s achievements in Personal, Social and Emotional, Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design, and Physical Development.  

Your child’s key person will also identify your child’s next steps to help challenge them and ensure that they are progressing. 

Play Days

‘Play Days’ are an opportunity for you to come into Nursery and be involved in your child’s play. The session usually lasts for approximately an hour. We allow a maximum of two parents per playroom at any one time to minimise the disruption to the daily routine.

Take Home ‘Pets’  

In the Toddler room, each key person’s group has a toy pet for the children to take turns in taking home over the weekend.  Looking after the pet helps encourage conversational skills and further develops a closer link between Nursery and home life.

The Elf on the Shelf ‘Cupcake’ 

The Elf on the Shelf ‘Cupcake’ is our take home friend who goes home with our Under 2s and joins in their family’s birthday celebrations. 

Parents are asked to write about their child’s birthday adventures in a diary, so their child’s story may be shared amongst their friends.

‘Get to Know’ Evenings
In 2017-18 we launched our programme of ‘Get to Know’ evenings which are designed to offer parents information on a wide range of topics that are relevant to young families.
