Department Staff

Director of Music:

Mr P Robinson

Philip Robinson was born in Lancashire and was educated at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. He then studied French horn at the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester. He began his teaching career as Head of Music at Avondale High School (now Stockport Academy) before moving to become Assistant Director of Music at Stockport Grammar School in 2004. He was then appointed as Director of Music at The King’s School, Chester in 2009 before taking up his current role at Birkenhead School in 2013. In addition to his various teaching positions he was, until 2012, Principal Conductor of the Warrington Youth Orchestra, and until 2009 was Musical Director of the Stockport Youth Wind Orchestra and Manchester University Wind Orchestra. He is also a Past Chairman of the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles (BASBWE). He lives in Wirral with his wife and two young sons.
 

Assistant Teacher of Academic Music:

Mrs G Coleman

Grace Coleman graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire in 1998 with a First Class BMus Hons degree and went on to gain a Diploma in Professional Studies in recorder performance. In 2004 she graduated from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where she had studied recorder performance and Historical Performance Practice. Between 2004 and 2010, Grace taught recorder and gave performance practice workshops at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She is sought after as a guest tutor on various residential and day courses including the Early Music Forums and gives advanced recorder workshops and private music tuition on the Wirral. Grace currently directs the Wirral Recorder Orchestra. Grace has performed as a soloist in the UK and is a member of Polyphonica Recorder Trio. Formed in 2006, the Trio has a blossoming international presence having performed in the Netherlands and a number of times in France and Germany. Their debut album was released in 2010 and they are currently recording their second album.
 

Prep Music Coordinator:

Mrs S Keating

Sue Keating studied Music at Durham University and has been responsible for Music in Junior Prep since 2000.  She has taught in both private and state schools as a class teacher and a music specialist. She plays the violin and the piano but her true passion is singing. Singing is so beneficial to many aspects of all our lives and she is always looking for ways to inspire children to enjoy singing.  She teaches Music and Singing to all pupils in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 and leads the weekly Hymn Practice. She also directs the Prep Orchestra and Prep Choirs and is Musical Director for the annual Year 6 End of Year Production.
 

Infants Music Teacher:

Miss S Parry

Sue Parry graduated as a teacher from the University of Wales with a BEd Hons. Her first post was as a Key Stage 1 Teacher and Music Co-ordinator in a state school. She joined Birkenhead School in 2014. Her love of music started at an early age when she learnt to play the piano and cello. She was a member of the school orchestra and choir and she used to play in music festivals.

Sue teaches Music to all the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils. She is the Music Director of Little School’s Nativity and the Director of Little School’s Summer Production. She leads a Little School Choir who perform to their parents at a Christmas Concert and during the School Open Morning.

She is keen to instil in pupils a love of music at a young age, so it may continue throughout their school life.
