Birkenhead Prep School
B.P.S.
prides itself in the experiences of Little School where we are dedicated to
creating a caring, secure, supportive and positive environment in which our
children can thrive. Our principal aim is to give all children the
Best Possible
Start to their education and to prepare them for further future
success.
Set in beautifully landscaped grounds in its own part of the campus, Little School is a purpose-designed building with its own classrooms, library and toilets.
The happiness and wellbeing of every child is our major aim. The children in Little School are cared for by a dedicated and experienced team of teachers.
Classrooms
are bright, spacious and attractively displayed with examples of the children’s
work. Little School has its own safe playground with a separate area for
Reception. As well as the facilities of Little School, the children have regular
use of the Prep Gym and, occasionally, the Sports Hall. They also use School
Field.
Daily assembly and “Praise in Song” is taken in the Little School Library twice a week and we go into Chapel three times each week. For special occasions such as the Christmas play, we also use the Prep Hall.
Children in Year 2 use the IT and Art and DT facilities in Junior Prep.
Lunch is taken in the School Dining Room. Food is of exceptionally good quality with great emphasis on well balanced, healthy and wholesome meals with a wide variety to suit all tastes.
Curriculum
We
want all of our children to develop in a lively, stimulating environment in
which exciting opportunities are created for learning to take place.
Although we take some note of the National Curriculum, as an Independent School B.P.S. is not bound by it and therefore can offer a broader curriculum that goes beyond statutory requirements.
Activities and learning opportunities for children in this age group are well planned to match the developmental stage of each child. The individual’s needs are carefully considered when planning for the following:
- Language and Literacy – communication through talking and listening as well as emphasis on reading and writing to a high standard in English.
- Numeracy – as well as developing children’s knowledge and understanding of Mathematics through practical activities and development of mental skills, we firmly believe in beginning to establish the traditional four rules of number-Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
- Creative – expressing thoughts and ideas through imaginative play, art, craft and music.
- Personal and Social – developing their awareness and knowledge of themselves and exploring their relationships with others.
- Technological – designing, making and building things with a purpose and opportunities to use the computers.
- Knowledge and understanding of the world – promoting awareness of the world around them through Science and Geography and fostering a sense of their place in time through History.
- Spiritual and Moral – encouraging an awareness of the Christian faith alongside other faiths and exploring personal values and attitudes as well as nurturing self esteem.
- Physical Development – encouraging healthy choices, developing control and coordination, expanding spatial awareness, participating in Games and P.E.
Each day provides a balance of opportunities so that every child can experience a range of activities. The curriculum is supported with appropriate trips out to places of interest which are intended to enhance the children’s learning experiences. As part of a whole school approach, we also visit the theatre at Christmas time.
