It is sensible if you select subjects for which you have already demonstrated an aptitude and, as far as possible, a combination of subjects which takes account of your career intentions. To follow through a subject to AS Level a student will need to have obtained a minimum Grade B at GCSE and overall will be required to have a minimum of 6 GCSEs at Grades C or above. In the case of subjects which have not been taken at GCSE relevant other subjects will be taken into account. However, although many courses at University will require specific AS/A2 level subjects, it is by no means so in all cases. It is also very important that you choose subjects you really want to study because this will help you when you make the step up from AS to A2 level work. Students are most likely to achieve success in subjects which they enjoy. It is also very likely that their future intentions will be affected rather more by the quality of their AS/A2 level grades than by the actual subjects they have studied. It is almost always a mistake to choose subjects because they are ‘better’ or ‘useful’ since these notions are relative and often false. It should also be noted that more than 50% of careers chosen by graduates are not linked to a specific subject.
Pastoral Care
Pastoral care in the Sixth Form is overseen by the Head of Sixth Form, Mr G. Hopkins, the Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Mr P Lindberg and a team of House-based Form Tutors. Your Form Tutor may not teach you any academic lessons but he or she will see you each day and is always available for advice and guidance. We place great emphasis on the importance of the trusting and mature relationship you will develop with your Form Tutor. It will be he or she who will help and prepare you for university entrance or alternative career-choices post-BS. It is also your Form Tutor who drafts your UCAS reference.
Present Sixth Form students have produced an "Alternative Sixth Form Prospectus" to provide prospective students with an insight into sixth Form Life. Some comments from recent leavers can be found here
