Theatre Visits: these included a set of Year 11 students attending a powerful performance of ‘Blood Brothers’ at The Palace Theatre, Manchester, in the Michaelmas Term. Subsequently, another set of Year 11 students attended a drama workshop about the play ‘A View from A Bridge’ by SAY2 Theatre Company. All Year 10 and 11 students attended a Drama workshop by MOPA Theatre Company on ‘Of Mice and Men’ (kindly subsidised by The Ladies’ Committee). Both of these events were held in Bushell Hall. The Year 10 Drama group attended a groundbreaking performance of a new, slightly controversial, play ‘Fram’ by Tony Harrison at The National Theatre in London. All Year 7 students visited The Octagon Theatre in Bolton in December to watch a performance of Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’. Our L6th Literature students also went to a production of “King Henry V” at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester in the Michaelmas term.

Debating: Two teams entered the Rotary Club Public Speaking Competition; one team were in Year 11, the other in Year 10. Peter Sinclair, Phil Gwyn and Nicholas Ramsbottom took part in the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition. Thomas Belcher and Patrick Anstey participated in the Schools’ Mace Competition.

Author visits: Hilary Green, a writer of fiction set during the Second World War, gave some workshop sessions to Sixth Form students in the Creative Writing group and also to younger pupils at lunchtime in the library. Anton Wills-Eve, a journalist/parent , gave a most informative talk to Sixth Form students about his career as a journalist

Library Events: A whole school cross curricular project on ‘Perspectives on War’ culminated in a display in the Library of written work, poems, letters and also a photographic exhibition from the History trip to the Battlefields.

Drama Club: This was started in Michaelmas term with a series of 3 workshops by Christopher Power on the theme: Perspectives on War. The Sixth Form members subsequently led the workshops and produced some interesting scenarios and playlets.

Residential Visits: A Creative Writing weekend was organized for the Sixth Form and Year 11. This was held during the Michaelmas Term. Some of the best work was published in ‘In Focus’.

Dance workshops: Two Streetdance workshops by Trapmedia Company were organized for all year 7 and 8 students in the summer term.
