- Year 7 pupils undertook a Field Study visit to Beaumaris Castle on
Anglesey in October. This supported their study of medieval castles and
cathedrals.
- As part of their visit to Boulogne in May Year 7 visited the First World
War cemetery at Etaples and undertook fieldwork tasks that involved
gathering and interpreting evidence.
- Year 8 visited the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds to support their
study of the English Civil War. Detailed studies were made of the relevant
galleries and boys enjoyed a “hands-on” workshop of the arms and armour used
in the conflict. They also got a close up of some spectacular birds of prey.
- Year 9 pupils visited the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry in
December to support their study of the Industrial Revolution. All had the
opportunity to see a textile demonstration in action, as well as
experiencing the sights and smells of underground Manchester.
- 35 GCSE students undertook a study tour of the battlefields of the Great
War in May, staying in the centre of Arras. They visited numerous sites
around the so-called Ypres Salient, as well as the Somme battlefield and
Vimy Ridge. A notable feature of the trip was their visit to the graves of
Old Birkonians who lost their lives during the Great War. They paid their
respects to Arthur Adams, Denis MacSwiney, W. G. F. Smith, Wilfred Heyworth,
E. C, Smith (only 18 years of age) and J.M.S. Sykes. The latter has the
School motto, ‘Beati Mundo Corde’, etched on his gravestone. In addition,
Joshua Beaumont of Year 10 was able to see the grave of his Great Great
Grandfather, Private H. G. Delamere of New Ferry.
- A group of 8 Upper Sixth students attended a lecture day in Manchester
in March to support their study of the European dictatorships in the
inter-war period, a key component of the A2 Level course.
