Press Release 24th August 2006
Star performer Lewis: one of the top five marks nationally in mathematics
More
than 50% of GCSE candidates at Birkenhead School have achieved A* or A grades in
at least 5 subjects, with 19% of all grades at A*. Headmaster John Clark said
students should be “very satisfied” with their achievements - most of them have
equalled or exceeded expectations. Among a number of fine individual
performances, Mr Clark singled out Lewis Robinson of Higher Bebington who
achieved one of the top five marks nationally in Mathematics, as well as 10 A*
grades: “All traditional ‘hard’ subjects, including three separate sciences, two
modern languages and Latin. Lewis’s achievement is all the more impressive when
one realises that, like so many of our students, he is also deeply involved in
other areas of school life, including 1st team cricket and hockey, Duke of
Edinburgh Award and representing the School in public speaking. He has this year
been Head Boy as well. It’s this kind of breadth combined with
quality which we consider to be so important.” Lewis now moves on to the Sixth
Form and is relishing the challenge of studying Maths, Physics, Further Maths
and History.
Other
top performers included Gregory Young with 10 A* grades, Matthew Ayaz,
Matthew Harper, and Siôn Owen with 8 A* and 2 A grades, and Nicholas Lytollis
who gained 7 passes at A* and 3 at A. Matthew Harper, who lives in Little
Sutton, excelled by achieving one of the top five marks nationally in French.
Mr Clark, who last week expressed his concerns about the widely publicised national decline in Physics at A level, said he was pleased that at GCSE candidates taking Physics at Birkenhead School had achieved an impressive tally of 77% A* and A grades. “The School has this summer invested some £120,000 in three new physics labs and it is pleasing to think that the large number of students opting for the subject at both GCSE and A level will soon be benefiting from these first-rate new facilities.”
.Results Summary
- 19% of the 617 subjects taken were awarded A* and 47.8% A* or A.
- 96.8% of pupils gained 5 or more passes at grades A* to C
