Press Release: 23rd August 2007
Impressively, a third of GCSE candidates at Birkenhead School have achieved A* or A grades in at least 7 subjects, with seven students achieving A* or A grades in all ten of their subjects. As well as congratulating those with top grades, Headmaster John Clark expressed particular satisfaction that, through their hard work and the dedication of their teachers, so many students across the board had equalled or exceeded expectations. Amongst the high flyers he singled out Thomas Walker from Heswall, who gained 9 A* grades and one grade A; Thomas has also just won a prestigious Arkwright Scholarship, a national award made to students considered to have exceptional potential in engineering and design. Other top performers were Fraser Cameron, from Wallasey, also with 9 A* and one A, Ben Wills-Eve of West Kirby with 8 A* and 2 A grades and Matthew Norval from Oxton with 7 A* and 3 A grades. As well as achieving 10 A and A* grades, Robert Mathew-Jones from Hoylake had the distinction of gaining one of the top 5 marks nationally out of over 1000,000 candidates sitting the AQA exam in French.
Mr
Clark commented: “Birkenhead School believes strongly in the value of a
traditional curriculum at both GCSE and A level, where the so-called ‘hard’
subjects continue to be a secure path to places at the top universities. Unlike
many schools nationally, and against the background of a much-discussed decline
in science teaching, the School maintains the value of separate sciences at GCSE
and this year’s results in those subjects are outstanding, with the percentage
of A & A* grades in Chemistry, Physics and Biology standing at 89%, 83% and 69%
respectively. Having invested in three new Physics labs last year, we were
delighted recently to win a grant of £40,000 from the Wolfson Foundation for the
further development of our Science and Technology facilities.”
Results Summary
- 16% of the 651 subjects taken were awarded A* and 46% A* or A.
