Latin is taught to all Year 7 pupils. From Year 8 it becomes an optional subject through to GCSE and A Level. We use the respected Cambridge Latin course and its e-learning resources.

The course has two main areas: Linguistic Study and Cultural Study
Our Aims are:-
-
To develop a sound basis of linguistic understanding which will enable pupils to study the subject further and with confidence.
-
To enhance pupils' command of English.
-
To develop pupils' knowledge of classical civilisation and to help them to understand the importance of the influence of the Romans in European and British History.
-
To kindle their imagination through contact with the ancient world and to stimulate a personal response.
Our Objectives are:-
-
To provide a context in which to acquire, practise and extend an understanding of common grammatical structures.
-
To increase knowledge of English by studying basic word derivation from Latin and by studying grammatical structures common to both Latin and English.
-
To develop an appreciation and knowledge of Roman life in the study of First Century Pompeii, Roman Britain and First Century Alexandria.
-
To provide a context in which pupils can make critical judgement on Roman civilisation.
-
To provide a context in which pupils may respond imaginatively to what they read, and develop basic literary criticism techniques by reading the stories included in the course.

Trips:‑
In Year 7 students partake in a hands-on session at the Deva Experience, visit the Roman galleries at the Grosvenor Museum and there is a guided tour around Roman Chester.
In Year 8 we visit Wroxeter (or “Viroconium”), the fourth largest city in Roman Britain, which began as a legionary fortress and later developed into a thriving civilian city, populated by retired soldiers and traders.
