7th February 2008 - World Museum of Liverpool for those studying Greek in Year 9.

As part of their study of Classical Greek and Greek Civilisation, Year 9 pupils visited the World Museum of Liverpool in the afternoon of the 7th of February. The aim was to explore aspects of Greek art in their historical and social context.

Students examined the marble statues of Zeus, Theseus and Apollo from the Ince Blundell collection (Roman copies of the original Greek bronze statues), and  spoke about the mythological background of these gods and heroes. We also looked at some samples of Greek pottery, their decorations and uses.

A visit to the Weston Discovery Centre gave students the opportunity to explore the mysteries of the Rosetta Stone at first hand. Artefacts and exhibits  from the Egyptian and Roman worlds were studied as part of our journey around the Ancient World.

We  finished our trip by exploring the impact of Greco-Roman architecture in Liverpool’s own. Greek styles of columns, Greek and Roman building designs and commemorative statures could be found all around us, from the Museum building, to the Empire Theatre and St.George’s Hall.

Our students did not even notice  the museum shop , a clear sign that they were enthralled by what they were discovering throughout this visit, no doubt.
