Year 7 French Trip - May 2004

It has long been a misnomer to refer to this particular tour to France as simply the “French Trip” as such a range of activity takes place including Maths and History that it really deserves the title “Cross-Curricular Study Visit”.

The Maths work involved a useful comparison of prices for everyday purchases in a supermarket in Birkenhead and a hypermarket in France. Currency conversions and coping with lack of standardisation in packet sizes made this a complex exercise. It was well completed by the pupils and Nicholas Downward was presented with a £5 book token for the best work.

Our historical study focussed as usual on the military cemetery in Etaples. The sheer number of graves and the ages of many of the victims left a lasting impression on the boys, a number of whom left thoughtful messages in the visitors’ book.

Our photos show this year’s group enjoying the varied activities as they cope with ordering drinks in a café, visit a specialist cheese shop, have a guided tour of a sweet factory (very popular!) and find some strange things under the water in Nausicaa Sea Life Centre.

Some excellent workbooks were produced, with Callum Hayward receiving a £10 book token for the best overall.

Great weather, loads of fun and a very well behaved group! A pity it’s only once a year!
