Pupils Fly South
Spanish Sun: the perfect antidote to Winter Blues
The half-term weather forecast doesn’t look too promising, unless of course you are off to Spain. No sooner have our French guests boarded the plane home than it is time for 11 students and 2 staff to head off to Spain, to IES Universidad Laboral, in Cáceres, from 15 – 23 February.
A full programme of visits awaits them, including a visit to Merida. Capital of Extremadura, this fascinating city was a very important Roman settlement, and boasts some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Europe. In its time, it was held by Christian Spain, Moorish Spain and even Portugal: a real crossroads, whose architecture is graced by vestiges of all its inhabitants.
Also on the agenda is a visit to Los Barruecos, a national nature reserve built around fantastically weathered granite boulders and water, with a fragile and unique flora and fauna.
Add to this lessons in school (en espanol) and typical Spanish hospitality, and a great week is in store.
All together now: ‘Oh this year I’m off to Cáceres....Y viva Extremadura!’
....and written by a pupil after the week in Spain:
Over half term some of our Spanish students took part in this year’s exchange
with our partner school in Cáceres, an area of Extremadura in Western Spain. Ms
Benzerfa and Mr McLachlan accompanied the students for eight days in Spain as
the first part of the exchange. Amongst other activities, our students enjoyed
an action-packed trip to the Roman town of Mérida. They also visited Cáceres Old
Town, which is applying for the title European Capital of Culture 2016. They
spent a day at the Monfraguë National Park and flew home exhausted, but having
had a great trip. All of that time spent chatting up the señoritas must have
tired them all out! Julian Smith said “Estupendo! I can’t wait for them to come
to the Wirral.” The students from Spain will be coming to Birkenhead in a few
weeks, so watch this space for more news, chicos y chicas.
