This note has been prepared to give a brief over-view of the subject for parents. For further information, please contact the Bursar.

The School is able to offer some fee assistance to prospective pupils who would not otherwise be able to take up a place at the School. This is done through a Bursary scheme, which is financed by the Birkenhead School Foundation Trust. This charity, established in 1998, uses its investment income and money from individual and corporate benefactors. The Foundation Trust is currently supporting some sixty pupils in the School.

There are, each year, more applications for Bursaries than can be supported by the Foundation Trust, and selection is based principally on a prospective pupil’s academic potential and the contribution to fees which parents can make. We ask parents to say what they can afford and this is considered in both absolute terms and relative to their declared financial circumstances. Parents of very able children should not be discouraged from applying even if their potential fee contribution is low.

Once a Bursary is given, this is generally held throughout the School, subject to parents’ financial circumstances remaining unchanged, their timely payment of fees and to satisfactory academic performance and conduct on the part of the pupil.

Hardship

For pupils already at the School, at any stage of their education, Bursaries may be awarded in the case of unforeseen hardship. Bursaries are considered in February each year and generally run from the start of the following academic year. Those wishing to apply should contact the Headmaster or Headmistress before the end of January.
