GCSEs 2010
Press Release: 24th August 2010
Full House for Birkenhead School
Following last week’s record A level results (83% A*-B), Birkenhead School is celebrating again. One in four GCSE students at Wirral’s only selective co-educational independent school have achieved 10 A* or A grades, with 28% of all subjects passed at A*. And for the second year running 100% of students have gained 5 or more passes at A*-C (including Maths, English & Science).
Amongst many high performers, Jack Granby from Bidston and James Green from Upton both achieved A* in all ten of their GCSE subjects, which included three separate sciences, Latin and a modern language. Headmaster John Clark commented “Our students follow a challenging curriculum and are to be congratulated unreservedly on their success. Jack and James were amongst 7 students, for example, who achieved full marks in all their Maths papers. How impressive is that!
However, their education has not just been about academic work: Jack plays 1st XI cricket, as well as hockey, and also sings in the Chapel Choir. James plays saxophone in the School Big Band and acts in almost all our drama productions.
A third of their year group has just undertaken the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and significant numbers of them have just returned from a rugby tour to Southern Africa and a month-long expedition to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. In today’s world, it is this breadth of experience which is so important.”
