GCSEs 2011

150 Years on: Birkenhead School’s first girls’ GCSEs ~ Press Release: 25th August 2011

Birkenhead School GCSE 2011 (2)-p.jpgAfter 150 years of educating boys only, Birkenhead School is this week celebrating the success of its first fully co-educational year group with an outstanding 63% of grades at A* and A. Having last week achieved the best A level results on Wirral, this week over one in three of their GCSE students achieved at least 9A* and A Grades, with an impressive 87% of all grades at A* to B.

Sarah Bibby, from West Kirby, who joined the School in Year 9, commented “When I arrived, I could never have expected to get 10 A*/A grades.  I am so much more confident here and am really looking forward to starting my A Levels.”

Harry Sturgess from Oxton and Matthew Rogers from West Kirby achieved A* in all ten of their GCSE subjects.  Both of them scored full marks in Maths and History, with Harry achieving full marks in Chemistry too.  Headmaster John Clark said “Typical of Birkenhead School students, Harry and Matthew have also thrown themselves into the wider life of the school - playing sport to county level, completing the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and touring abroad this summer with the cricket team and Chapel Choir.  Our students enjoy the best of both worlds: traditional academic subjects (70% of our Chemistry grades, for example were at A-star) alongside the challenge and enjoyment of creative, sporting and outdoor pursuits.”
