The BS under 13 Cricket
defeated Stockport Grammar School to become the county champions at cricket.
After heavy overnight rain it was decided to play on the artificial wicket at
Lymm High School, who hosted the final. After a reasonable start BS lost a
couple of early wickets and found it difficult to get the ball to the boundary
after a heavy shower drenched the outfield. However, Alex Watkins dug in and
showed that patience, coupled with a sound technique, was essential in dealing
with a very good opposition set of bowlers. He scored 26 runs and was
instrumental in BS reaching a total of 87 from their allotted 20 overs.
However, the sun came out and the outfield started to dry out and the ball began
to run much faster across it when Stockport came into bat. Partrick Benc bowled
an excellent opening spell and, ably supported by Jake Jackson, Harry Sturgess
and Andrew Crosby, the opposition soon fell behind the required run rate.
Nevertheless, their County player then hit 17 runs in the 15th over
and it seemed that the game was edging away from us. Freddie Billington came on
and bowled tightly at one end and then Harry Sturgess made the breakthrough. He
bowled an excellent wicket maiden in the 19th over, bowling their
star player and seemingly turning the game back our way. Freddie Billington then
held his nerve in the final over and, with 6 runs being required off the last
ball, had the batsman caught behind. Rapturous celebrations followed and a very
excited team collected their trophies, much to the delight of the many parents
who made the trip to watch. It was an excellent team effort and a superb end to
what has been a very successful season.
