David
Hurst of the Lower Sixth, Captain of the School’s 1st XI cricket team, has been
selected for membership of the Lancashire County Cricket Club Academy.
This is a great honour for David, who is one of only 10 young players from 15 to
20 years of age to be chosen. There are no trials involved and individuals are
picked on the strength of their consistent performance for county and club
during the previous season.
David has to attend Old Trafford 3 evenings every week for media training
(talking to ‘In Focus’ was good preparation!), and tactical training on the
field, captaining skills, and general tactical awareness. In addition, he works
out at a Manchester gym once a week with a personal trainer. Cricket coaching is
provided by the likes of Mike Watkinson, the Lancashire Manager, and Steve
Titchard, the former county player. David’s cricketing talent was recognised
here at School many years ago, and he clearly has the potential to go a long way
in the game.
An all round sportsman, David also plays full-back for the School’s 1st XV, and only recently stopped playing football competitively. “This is a great achievement,” said Birkenhead School cricket professional Brad Donelan. “David works extremely hard at his game and is mentally very strong. I am sure he will relish this opportunity David will join another former Birkenhead School 1st XI Captain, Simon Marshall, who is already at the Academy.
Pictured above David is welcomed to Lancashire CCC by former Lancashire and England Wicket keeper Warren Hegg, who presented him with a LCC Fleece.
School cricket supporters can rest assured that David still has two seasons left playing for us!
