Nulli
Secundus
Mike Hudson had to swallow deeply during his last GCSE Latin lesson on Tuesday May 15th. Some clever soul had arranged a very special presentation to mark his retirement at the end of this term.
The class produced a pair of Dartington Crystal tumblers, a bottle of The Macallan, and a beautifully engraved holder, bearing their good wishes and the motto Nulli Secundus.
Mike was visibly touched, especially as the inscription was accurate: ‘Nulli, you see, is in the dative. Second to none,’ he glossed, before posing for a photograph with a small malt and a big grin.
Class
member Matthew Thomas explained: ‘We knew it was his last exam lesson, and we
thought we should do something special. We designed the little wooden stand, and
Mr (Steve) Parry made it for us. Mr Hudson is a great teacher, and we will miss
him.’
As the Roman poet Cattullus had it: Ave atque vale!
