The first annual Spanish exchange with the new school in Pamplona took place earlier this year. The visitors (40 in all) arrived in their coach at 7pm, and, to get acquainted, the 6th Form students hosted a party to improve Anglo-Spanish relations. At the start of the party, there was a divide through the centre room that Moses would envy. However, by the end, everyone was close like a big happy European family! We might not have the same currency, but we can sure party like we were back in Pangean times (Google it).

A slew of activities was organised to make the bonding run more smoothly, such as the ever-popular visit to the zoo where the “frost fair” was being held . However, our representatives decided that they were too “cool” and left the skating to the Spanish people. A trip to the zoo was also a highlight, as was a trip to the cinema to see the latest James Bond film, ‘Quantum of Solace’ (Organised by the students of the Sixth Form again). The Spanish-subtitled section of the film was especially well-received . . . for some reason. A trip to see Liverpool Football Club was unfortunately not quite as successful – only manager Rafael Benitez ended up being there due to a drugs test for the players much to the Spanish (and our Head of Spanish, Mr Brookes’) dismay.

All in all, everyone was in agreement that our part of the exchange was a great success. Now all that is left to do is for the Spanish leg to be equally as enjoyable. I’m sure it will. Afterwards, look out for an article in ‘In Focus’ on the entire trip
