The Morning After
School counts the cost of storm-force winds

It was, by all accounts, a very strong wind that brought chaos and destruction to the country on Thursday 18th. Having large numbers of buildings, and many venerable trees, School faced the possilbility of serious damage.

The most noticeable loss is the fall of one of the magnificent trees which line Shrewsbury Road. Taking the wall with it, the mighty trunk beech fell perilously close to the houses on the opposite side of the busy road. As in all such events, it was lucky that no-one was injured.

Minor damage includes missing tiles and broken branches. The roots of the pine tree on Kingsmead Road South lifted sufficiently to demolish 10 metres of wall, and coping tiles disappeared from the Prep.

I suppose we got off lightly: tiles can be replaced, and walls rebuilt. Nobody was injured. But that tree had probably seen every pupil through our gates since we moved to Shrewsbury Road…
