Martin
Ince and Edward Tam represented Birkenhead School in the Twelfth British Biology
Olympiad, organised by the Institute of Biology. Over 1500 students entered the
competition, and faced challenging questions on Cell Biology (plant and animal),
Animal Anatomy and Physiology, and Genetics and evolution, as well as an essay
paper.
Continuing our fine record in such contests, Martin Ince was awarded a bronze medal, and Edward Tam was Highly Commended. Martin now travels to the awards ceremony at Imperial College, London, where the awards lecture will be given by Prof. Colin Blakemore.
The overall winners of the British leg of the contest go forward to represent Britain in the International Biology Olympiad. At a time when there is much genuine concern about the state of Science teaching, it is good to reinforce the message that at Birkenhead School, Science, in all its forms, is very much alive and kicking!
