Superb A level Results

A level stars break the records
Students at Birkenhead School have achieved a stunning 84% of grades at A* to B, which represents an all-time record for the independent, co-educational school in Oxton. The previous record of 74% was achieved in 2007.  13% of results this year were at the new, challenging A* grade, which requires students to reach A standard overall and additionally an average of over 90% in the more difficult A2 modules. Headmaster John Clark congratulated students and staff: “These results represent an outstanding achievement for individuals and the school as whole. With the rest of the country worrying about university places, it is a joy to see our candidates well ahead in securing places on their first choice university courses at top flight Russell Group universities. Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science remain popular and successful choices for both boys and girls at Birkenhead School, but it is pleasing to see many still opting for competitive non-vocational courses such as English, history, classics and philosophy.”

Particular stars, who achieved the new A* grade in all of their subjects, including Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics, were Ben White from Oxton, James Sherman from Birkenhead and David Pennefather who lives in Cronton, Cheshire. David also exceeded by some way the grades he needed to secure his place to read Chemical Engineering at Cambridge. Medical successes included Emma Walshaw from West Kirby (Dentistry, Newcastle), Tom Ince from Wallasey (Medicine, Leeds) and Callum Hayward from Meols (Veterinary Medicine, Nottingham), who all achieved 4 A grades. Off to Oxford University are Nicholas Ramsbottom, from Caldy, to read Chemistry and Michalis Migos from Rock Ferry, who will be reading Biochemistry. John Clark added: “These are just a few of the outstanding individuals who attend our school from right across the Wirral and beyond. Very nearly a third of our A level candidates achieved A* or A in all of their A levels, which demands real commitment from both them and their teachers. These are not ‘easy’ subjects and I am unhappy when I hear our students’ achievements being talked down at this time of year by voices in the media seeking to make bad news out of good.”
