Johnson Foundation supports two local schools

Headmistress Carole Evans, Peter Johnson and Headmaster Stuart Haggett Birkenhead School and Birkenhead High School are to receive financial support from the Johnson Foundation.

The Foundation has agreed to provide a Scholarship annually, for each school, for each of the next seven years, which will be awarded to bright pupils aged 11 years who would not otherwise be able to take up places at these independent schools. With two new pupils benefiting each year, by 2009 there will be a total of 14 pupils in receipt of scholarships worth almost £0.5 million.

The first Johnson Foundation Scholarships, which will start in September 2003, will be awarded to pupils who show particular potential at the Entrance Examinations held in early 2003 and will be worth up to £35,000 to each pupil over the seven years they attend the schools.

Peter Johnson, who established the Foundation in 1987, said, “The Trustees are particularly pleased to offer these Scholarships. I hope that talented young people who might otherwise not be able to attend these successful local schools will be encouraged to enter the examinations and benefit from the outstanding education offered.”

Headmistress, Carole Evans, and former Headmaster, Stuart Haggett said, “We are delighted that the Johnson Foundation has recognised the achievements of our two schools. This very generous gesture will have a far- reaching impact on the lives and futures of a deserving group of young people from this area.”
