Below is an invitation which the Headmaster sent to the Leavers of 1970 & 1971 and 1980 & 1981 in November. Sadly, we do not have current addresses for many of our Old Birkonians so, if you are reading this and did not receive your invitation, please contact Mary Butterworth tel: 0151 651 3007 or email meb@birkenheadschool.co.uk
You will also see the lists which we have compiled of the Leavers of 1970 & 1971 and 1980 & 1981. Although you may not necessarily have left in that year, we think that would have been your year group, if you had stayed until the end of U6th. Please let us know if we have made a mistake and there is:
- someone on the lists who should not be on them and properly belongs to another year group or,
- someone is missing from the lists and should be on them

Dear Old Birkonian
Welcome Back Dinner for the Classes of 1970& 1971 and 1980 & 1981
During our 150th Anniversary year last year, we held a series of ten Welcome Back Dinners spanning the last twenty years. The Old Birkonians who came back enjoyed their evening here very much. All ten occasions, however large or small the gathering, had a happy, relaxed atmosphere and everyone said how good it had been to get together with their fellow students, catch up with some of their old teachers and revisit their old haunts on campus.
We are very keen to continue these Welcome Back Dinners - we have deliberately not called them ‘reunions’ - and to make them a regular event in the School calendar. We know, however, that our Old Birkonians are scattered far and wide, and now lead lives far removed from Birkenhead School. Feedback from Old Birkonians at the previous dinners has taught us that we need to give you as much notice as possible. I hope that three months is sufficient, though a recent dinner held here for the Leavers of 1981 took them over a year to organise! We also had occasion last year to combine two sets of 2 year groups who were ten years apart. The evening worked so well that we have deliberately repeated the formula this year.
I would like, therefore, to invite you to the Dinner for the Classes of 1970& 1971 and 1980 & 1981 which will take place in the Dining Hall on Saturday 10th March 2012. A number of current and retired staff will also be attending.
The formula is simple: we provide a meal, you pay for the drinks. The programme for each dinner is as follows:
6.00 pm Tours of the School – starting at the Dining Hall (optional)
7.00 pm Bar open
7.45 pm Welcome by the Headmaster followed by dinner

If you can’t make 10th March but would still like to come back, we will be pleased to invite you to one of the other dinners – just contact Mary Butterworth. More details about your Welcome Back Dinner are on the School website. Importantly, please let any of your contemporaries with whom you are still in contact know about the dinner or let us have their contact details so that we can send them an invitation. Sadly, we have lost touch with many of our Old Birkonians and our database is by no means up-to-date!
You are part of the School’s 150-year history and we would like as many people as possible who share that history to join us in our continuing sesquicentennial celebrations (try saying that at the end of the dinner!).
