This year, Birkenhead School Art students from Years 10 & 12 were selected to be part of ‘Fresh Perspectives’, an exhibition showcasing young talent at The Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight.

This was a very special opportunity for the students, and Mrs Cormack and I felt extremely proud to see their wonderful work hung in this nationally respected gallery. The opening event was made all the more memorable by Tasmin Lee, accompanied by Mr Robinson, entertaining the audience with a musical piece related to the artworks.

For the show, Year 10 students created work which explored Identity and Place though the imagery of birds. One group made ceramic birds which incorporated text that evoked the essence and symbolism of their chosen bird. The second group created mixed media pieces, merging maps of locations, home and away, with bird drypoints to evoke ideas of travel and migration.

Inspired by surrealism, Year 12 students explored ‘Metamorphosis’ in their amazing, large scale oil paintings while simultaneously building ceramic sculptures based on their favourite birds, investigating issues such as individuality and liberty.

At the start of May, a small group of Year 10 students will run an afternoon print workshop at the gallery for members of the public.

The exhibition runs until 6th May 2019.

The exhibition is the second exhibition that students have been asked to exhibit in during this academic year.  In October, work by GCSE Fine Art students, was displayed in the Williamson Art Gallery.  Click here to read more.
