1.7 milion people cycle in the UK everyday and over the last couple of weeks our students have been joining them in the saddle. Find out how our Year 5 pupils have been getting on during their Bikeability cycling proficiency course here:

Over the last couple of weeks our Year 5 pupils have got stuck into their Bikeability training. Bikeability is a cycle training programme that is designed to give students the practical skills and confidence to ride on today’s roads. The course the students take part in is based on the government approved National Standards for cycle training.

The children braved the rain as they learnt how to prepare themselves and their bikes for cycling, and start and stop with control on the Prep playground. They then put their new skills to practice in the afternoon as they went out on real roads. They learnt how to position themselves on the road and how to pass parked vehicles and side roads. The students had a great time, despite the weather, and were praised for their enthusiasm! Year 5 pupil Daniel Garrett commented on his experience and said, “I enjoyed going on the roads and learning how to actually indicate and look behind you. I’m looking forward to going out on the roads with my Dad!”

The benefits of students undertaking this kind of training extends well beyond being safe on the road. Cycling improves health and wellbeing and can also build independence as they have the confidence to travel further away from home on their own. Cycling is also a tricky skill to master so courses like this build perseverance and resilience in the students. Providing this opportunity in the Prep is just one of many enrichment activities we offer to the students. Follow the link below to see what more is available ‘Beyond the Curriculum’:
