The maths departments in Prep and Seniors have been busy putting our Year 5 and 6 pupils through their paces with one-day maths events recently.  During the events students have taken part in a number of tasks including Cross Number, Problem Solving and a Maths Relay Race. Find out how the teams got on here, and read Jack Vicars account of the Year 6 challenge.

The Maths Team Challenge's were all-day events involving all pupils from Year 5 and Year 6. The teams were put through a number of tasks including Cross Number, Problem Solving and a Maths Relay Race. The events were a great success, and enjoyed by all.

In the Year 5 competition the final team scores were very close, but eventually one team emerged as the overall winners. This team consisted of  Kai Jackson, Lincoln Hibbert, Reefe Pankhurst and Olivia Gould, and they were all presented with individual trophies.

Organiser Mr Maher was impressed by all of the participants, he said, "Every pupil was engaged throughout and each demonstrated the tenacity and diligence needed to get through the demanding day".

'Year 6 Maths Challenge Day' By Jack Vicars

On the 9th of May, Year 6 went up to Bushell Hall for a series of maths challenges. We were in teams of four competing to have the most points at the end of the four rounds.

The first challenge Mr Maher set us was ‘Make A Number’. This challenge was based on the Channel 4 TV Show Countdown. We had 5 numbers and needed to make the target set. We had four questions with a possible 40 points up for grabs. After the first round, team 13 had a slight lead over team 10. The second round was the cross number. The teams of four split up into 2 sets of pairs. One pair had the across clues whereas the other had the down clues; in these clues you needed to answer questions such as ‘ A bullseye in darts’ to fill in your team’s cross number. Following this round, team 13 kept their lead with team 1 making a comeback.

Mr Maher then told us a mystery about fractions which left us all puzzled….in fact, we’re still all puzzled now trying to solve it!

After lunch, we had the hardest round of them all, the group round. We had 15 questions, with which we had twenty minutes to answer. In this round, anything could happen! And it did! Team 13 dropped from first to second . With 3 teams making comebacks.

The final round was the relay with one simple objective: answer and get the next sheet. This was a tough round, one of team 13’s pairs finished them all. But the first placed team also did. After a lot of hard work, the results were in……There was a joint second place team and a winner. We were told that the winning team won by one single question!

...... In joint second place..... Teams 9 and 10! But who would win?..... The winner of the Year 6 Maths Challenge Day is....... Team 13!! A huge round of applause erupted. Thank You to Mr Maher for running this event and well done to the eventual winners, Eric Mei, Ellen Price, Eve Sewell and Jack Vicars.
