Our Year 7's have been learning about the history of our local area by going on a whistle stop tour of Birkenhead and Liverpool. The whole year had a fantastic time and you can read Year 7 Scarlett's account of the day here:

'Year 7 History Trip to Liverpool' by Scarlett Quinn

"Raring to go, the year 7 pupils loaded onto the coaches and set off on an adventure.  The first destination was Birkenhead, or Woodside ferry terminal to be precise.  We walked to the front and marvelled at the River Mersey and the famous Liverpool skyline.  We heard all about Liverpool in the Middle Ages and the importance of trade with Oreland in the 13th century.  From here we walked along to the Priory, which is the oldest building in Merseyside.  This was useful as we have been learning about the middle ages in our history lessons and the Priory was a great example of why the Church was such an important institution for the people.

From there, we visited the War Memorial at Hamilton Square. It was emotional to see how many people had died in the war including several Old Birkonians. Mr McKie told us many interesting facts about several of these OBs, including the three Macswinney brothers that all perished in the Great War.

It was then a quick dart through the tunnel to the Museum of Liverpool.  Upon arrival we were handed booklets and were free to walk around the museum, filling in our timeline on the history of Liverpool. After we finished this, we were allowed to explore the other levels of the museum which included the Beatles story and much more. Once everyone had finished, we travelled back to school. It was an informative trip and good fun. From my perspective, the most interesting thing I learned was the development of Liverpool over time."
