21 August 2018

On 21st August, children attending ‘Dinosaur Week’ at Star Activities here at Birkenhead School, had a fantastic surprise when they welcomed Joe and Sam from Teach Rex and their very special friend, Jam, the T-Rex.

The children were all so excited by Jam’s arrival and loved hearing him roar and saying hello by stroking his head.

After being introduced to Jam, the children then listened to facts and information all about dinosaurs, in particular, about the Tyrannosaurus rex, hearing all about the people who found the first T-Rex fossils and misconceptions about how the T-Rex was dumb and didn’t have any friends.

There were even some brave volunteers who helped demonstrate Jam’s impressive sense of smell and his powerful jaw (the force of an elephant sitting on your head!)

Following a competition to see which team of children had the most powerful roar, it was time for Jam to take a break, before the next session with Teach Rex.

As two qualified, passionate and charismatic teachers, Joe and Sam then taught groups of 5-7 year olds about using adjectives to describe Jam and verbs and adverbs to talk about their actions, for example, to sprint quickly away from a chasing dinosaur.

This prepared the children brilliantly for their time on the green screen, when they acted out the scenario of seeing a dinosaur and then running away to escape those mighty jaws!

The children all had an absolutely wonderful time with Teach Rex and Jam and learned a great deal from Joe and Sam and we’d like to thank the three of them very much for visiting us.
