Birkenhead School is one of 4 Scout groups across Merseyside selected to run their exciting, new Squirrels programme.
We are delighted to have launched 'Squirrels', an exciting new initiative with the Scouts organisation, for children in Prep-Prep and Reception children.
Our School Scout group (Birkenhead 20th, founded in 1924) is one of just 4 Scout Groups across Merseyside selected for a new and exciting venture that Scouting has been piloting.
What is ‘Squirrels’?
‘Squirrels’ has been created by the Scouts for 4 and 5 year olds, building skills and preparing children for moving up to Beavers and beyond. The aim of the provision is to help young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most and where it is most needed.
Every week, Squirrels will gather to grow and learn their way through lots of different games and activities. The one hour sessions will be a brilliant opportunity for young people to take their first step into being part of Scouts, and they’ll help everyone get ready for the adventure of school too.
Sessions are packed with outdoors activities, fun, games, badges, laughter, and so much more to help our youngest members learn the skills they need for life. As in other Scout sections, Squirrels will work their way through activity badges which they will be awarded upon completion. The badges have been designed as part of an age appropriate program of activities, which encourages community and home learning.
The sessions run every Tuesday, during term time, between 3.45 pm and 4.45 pm in the Outdoor Classroom and are run by Mr Davies, Reception teacher, and Miss Lavelle and Mrs Workman. Mr Britton and Mrs Hazlehurst, who also run Beavers, Cubs and Scouts at the School, are supporting as well as students/Young Leaders from Seniors..
Children are eligible to start Squirrels after their 4th birthday, until they move up to Beavers, after their 6th birthday.
Squirrels has proved to be extremely popular with 24 'squirrels' signed up and a waiting list is in operation.
If you would like to find out more about the programme, please contact Mr Davies, Reception Teacher.
