For the first Nicholls Lecture of the new academic year, we were fortunate to learn about the myriad of different options that a degree in Geography can afford you in future life.
By James H, Upper Sixth student and Head of School
Old Birkonian, Katherine Rutherford, began by giving us a demonstration of what was generated when she asked Chat GPT what the career options for graduates with a Geography degree were. Only four suggestions appeared and yet, over the course of her lecture, Katherine showed us that no matter what degree or career path you choose, there are far more options out there and that your chosen degree does not define the career path you choose.
Katherine’s journey through her time at Birkenhead School to Nottingham University and then to AECOM, an engineering consultancy firm, was both inspiring and engaging. From interactive surveys to the impact of renewable energy on the earth, this informative and entertaining lecture showed us the importance of doing what you enjoy. In Katherine’s work as a consultant, we were shown the significance of asking people around us and in the community for their opinions and the importance of considering them all. This was a great demonstration of how teamwork and communication can make the world a much better place.
I would like to thank Katherine for giving up her time to speak to us, and for sharing her vast number of experiences. It was thought provoking and inspiring in equal measure.
