08 October 2018

On Thursday 4th October, it was National Poetry Day and the topic this year was Change.

Our Prep pupils enjoyed learning about the variety of different styles of poems and poetry, as well as techniques and ideas for them to use in their own verse.

Year 6 pupils also discovered all about war poetry, ahead of The Wilfred Owen Commemoration, starting on 1st November, with Charlie Lea, author and principal at Read Now Write Now. Charlie discussed different techniques to enhance poems, with the pupils then being given the opportunity to write their own poems in their groups.

Our students in Seniors celebrated the day by enjoying a BBC Live Lesson which taught them valuable skills, including examples of the difference between metaphors and similes, they then wrote lines themselves before hearing a poem describing onomatopoeia.

The whole day was a great success and the celebrations of National Poetry Day continued in Prep as the following Monday’s assembly saw each year group reading out their particular style of poem for everyone to enjoy.

To hear a few examples of the fantastic poems, please view the videos below and more photos can be found on the Birkenhead School Facebook page.
