In recognition of National Road Safety Week, Birkenhead School’s Sixth Form welcomed in Old Boy, Jeremy Williamson, to discuss road safety. As lead on Road Safety on the Wirral for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Jeremy gave a very informative talk on the importance of road safety.

The Sixth Formers then split in to two groups to take part in a search around a vehicle that had been involved in a road traffic collision. The students acted as ‘crash detectives’, gathering together clues and evidence to lead them to the cause of the accident.

Following their search, Jeremy recorded the evidence gathered, such as a mobile phone on the back seat, an empty bottle of beer, a muddy footprint of the passenger dashboard and the fact that one of the passenger seatbelts was tucked behind the seat and unable to be used, to come to their conclusion.

The students were them informed of the actual story behind the collision to see if their evidence gathered had guided them in the right direction.

Jeremy then discussed more tips and information with the students, such as the fact that there is no safe limit when driving after having a drink and what they can say if they’re in a friend’s car and feel they’re driving too quickly that will encourage them to stop or slow down, such as warning that they feel sick or need the toilet.

The students all found the talk very helpful and insightful and all picked up on useful and practical advice that they can use when driving or in a car with friends.
