Science Nights at Birkenhead School

Sunday Times Schools Guide 2025 - Independent Secondary School of the Year North West

Science Nights at Birkenhead School

Science Nights at Birkenhead School went off with a BANG at the end of term.

We were delighted to welcome local Cubs and Brownies to take part in a range of experiments from making universal indicator pictures to firing a pneumatic target and catching the nozzle at the other end of the room!

Bushell Hall was filled with the sounds of amazed gasps and shrieks of delight as the children discovered how cool Science can be. The clubs got to try experiments like giant bubble making, circuit building and threading sticks through balloons without popping them. Everyone was captivated by our Science Leaders who led all the experiments explaining the science behind them along the way. The evening concluded with a ‘Flash Bang lecture’ with Mrs Tharme captivating the room with some incredible demonstrations such as using methane to set our Scouts Leader, Kelvin’s, arm on fire – safely, of course.

Thank you to our Science Leaders who made the fabulous evening a success and ran the experiments for the groups – they truly were fantastic role models. We’d also like to thank our wonderful Chemistry Department and Lab Technicians whose work behind the scenes didn’t go unnoticed.

We hope all the budding young scientists had a brilliant time.
