Prep School Leadership Pathways

Sunday Times Schools Guide 2025 - Independent Secondary School of the Year North West

Leadership Pathways in Prep

At Birkenhead School we aim to provide opportunities for students to learn and practise key life skills both inside and outside the classroom. One such skill is leadership, which for many will be essential as they progress on to further education and the wider world of work.

Prefects & Head Students

Pupils are selected to be Prefects in Year 6 in Prep and act as positive role models to other students with regard to effort, conduct and commitment to the ethos and values of the School.

Members of the Prefect team are selected to be Head Students to represent their peers.

Co-Curricular Leadership

Year 6 pupils can be appointed as Music Prefects or Sports Captains in their final year in Prep.

Music Prefects are fully immersed in the musical life of Prep. As committed members of Prep Orchestra, the Year 6 Choir and Chapel Choir, they assist with the organisation or rehearsals whilst embracing the opportunity to support younger musicians.

Sports Captains a Year 6 pupil is chosen to be a team captain in each representative sport in Year 6.

Student Council

In Prep, both Little School and Juniors have their own Student Council, enabling younger pupils to have a voice and input on School matters and issues which directly impact them. Each year, pupils apply in large numbers and present in front of their peers. Student Council representatives meet regularly throughout the year to discuss topics and put forward the views of their friends on matters that are important to them.

Mentorship & Role Models

Older students in Prep mentor younger pupils as they progress through the years.

Digital Leaders: students in Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to become a Digital Leader to support the use and further the development of ICT in Prep.
Prep Readers: As part of the Prep approach to reading development, students in Year 6 read weekly alongside younger pupils in Pre-Prep and Little School departments.
Eureka Mentors: older pupils lead academic extension activities for younger students, planning and organising activities for the children to enjoy.
Play Leaders: Year 2 pupils are selected to be Play Leaders in Little School and run fun games in the Little School playground.

Skills & Knowledge

Pupils have the opportunity to take part in programmes exclusive to Birkenhead School, to develop their skills and knowledge:

Civic Award Scheme: pupils in Little School and Juniors work towards the Civic Award Scheme.
Aspiring Leaders Programme: the 12 week programme is for Year 5 and 6 pupils and looks to develop core leadership skills in a practical and enjoyable way.
Enrich & Explore: offered in Little School
Future Skills: offered in Juniors

Lecture Series

The Lecture Series programme, comprising of the Boumphrey Lecture Series in Prep, runs throughout the School and looks to give pupils the opportunity to hear from leaders across different industries and sectors.
