Birkenhead School Pre-Prep (3-4 Years)
The early years are such an important stage in a child’s development, and joining Birkenhead School at a young enables children to build strong foundations for learning, form lasting friendships and become part of a caring and supportive school community from day one.
Pre-Prep at the age of 3 is where your child’s Birkenhead School journey begins – a happy and inspiring environment where children grow in confidence, curiosity and independence from their very first day.
With caring staff, engaging learning experiences and a wealth of opportunities to explore and discover, every child is encouraged to shine. When the time comes the move to Reception is seamless and familiar as they start the next step in their Birkenhead School journey.
Learning Through Play
In Early Years children learn through play. Our Pre-Prep is a vibrant hub where curiosity meets creativity and a life-long love of learning is forged. Children take part in a wide range of activities including Yoga, Dance, Mystery Readers, the annual Pre-Prep and Little School Sports Day, as well as Christmas and Summer performances. Children make friends with their peers and get to meet children in different year groups and a highlight of each week is when our Year 6 ‘Reading Buddies’ read with children in Pre-Prep.
Our Pre-Prep Setting
Situated within the beautiful grounds of Birkenhead School, we have easy access to the wider school facilities including playing fields, Forest School and Dining Hall. Regular walks and activities within the School grounds add to the wider experiences for our youngest learners and help with familiarity for when they come to move through the School.

Next Step to School
The Reception teachers plan a variety of events and visits to support the move to Reception. These include:
- Listening to stories told by the Reception teachers in Pre-Prep
- Having play-dates in Reception before they start
- Taking part in assemblies in Little School in the summer term
- Spending a day in in Reception so that they feel become familiar with their new classroom and teacher before they start.
Reception teachers also offer an Induction Evening in June for new parents so that parents have an opportunity to meet their child’s class teacher and teaching assistant and to see the classroom and resources on offer.
