Scholarships & Bursaries at Birkenhead School

Investing in Potential, Creating Opportunities

At Birkenhead School, we believe that an outstanding education should be accessible to all talented students, regardless of financial circumstances. Our Scholarships & Bursary Scheme ensures that academically able and gifted children can benefit from everything our School has to offer.

Bursaries

Bursaries are awarded to help students take up or retain a place at the School where their parents or guardian cannot pay full fees. All Bursaries are means-tested and may cover up to 100% of the full fee. It is unusual for very young children to be awarded Bursaries as assessment of their potential has to be established before a bursary can be considered.

Scholarships

In addition to bursaries, the School offers the following Scholarships:

Year 7 Scholarships
Academic | Music

Academic and Music carry a one-off monetary value, are available for exceptional candidates (available to both existing Prep students and new students joining Seniors):

Year 9 Scholarships
Academic | Sport | Music

A small number of Awards, carrying a one-off monetary value, will be available for exceptional candidates, both existing (if not in receipt of an existing award) and new students joining at Year 9. All candidates are required to evidence their exceptional contribution to School life, not only in performance, but also in their commitment and values shown.

Sixth Form Access Scholarships
Academic | Sport |
Music

Access Scholarships are available to students who have not previously benefitted from an independent education:

  • Academic Access Scholarships for those entering the Sixth Form with outstanding GCSE results from other schools who would otherwise not be able to access a Birkenhead School education and who have not previously benefitted from an independent education.
  • Sports Access Scholarships for those entering Sixth Form who have already achieved a regional or national level of representational excellence within any of the following sports: Rugby, Netball, Cricket, Hockey, Lacrosse and who have not previously benefitted from an independent education.
  • Music Access Scholarships for those entering the Sixth Form who have made a truly exceptional contribution with the Music field and who have not previously benefitted from an independent education.

Sixth Form Honorary Scholarships
Academic | Sport | Music

  • Honorary Academic Scholarships are awarded to the very highest performers at GCSE, both in terms of grades, but also values and attitudes across the GCSE course.
  • Honorary Sports Scholarships are awarded to existing students who have not only made an exceptional contribution to sport over many years, and at a high level, but who have constantly modelled the commitment and values that make them role models for the younger years.
  • Honorary Music Scholarships are awarded to existing students who have not only made an exceptional contribution to both choral and instrumental music over many years, and at a high level, but who have constantly modelled the commitment and values that make them role models for the younger years

The award of a Scholarship does not preclude the award of a Bursary.
