Success at the National Lacrosse Championships
We were thrilled to take three teams—U19, U15, and U13—to this year’s National Lacrosse Championships, where they delivered incredible performances on the national stage. Representing #TeamBirkenhead with pride and determination, the teams looked the part in their brand-new kits, generously funded by our Parents’ Association.
Both our U13 and U15 squads reached the semi-finals, an extraordinary achievement that reflects their dedication, skill, and teamwork. Below, Ms. Gilbride and Mrs. Vicars share the highlights of an unforgettable tournament.
U13: National Semi-Finalists
Our U13 team made history, finishing among the top four teams in the country—a phenomenal achievement! After a narrow 3-2 loss to Wycombe Abbey in their opening match, the girls bounced back in style, securing dominant wins over Heathfield, Walthamstow, and Lady Eleanor Holles to finish second in their group.
In the knockout rounds, they put on a stellar display, defeating St. Swithin’s 6-1 in the last 16 and edging out Putney High 2-1 in a thrilling quarter-final. The semi-final against Berkhamsted was fiercely contested, with the score locked at 1-1 at halftime. Despite a determined effort, Berkhamsted pulled ahead in the second half. Finishing in the top four in the country is an extraordinary result, and we couldn’t be prouder of our U13 team!
U15: Top Four in the Country
Our U15 squad came heartbreakingly close to the final, missing out by the narrowest of margins. After a gripping 2-2 draw in extra time, the match was decided by the “golden goal” rule, with Putney High advancing. To finish in the top four in the country is an outstanding achievement, and we are incredibly proud of the team’s skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
U19: Top Eight in Division 1
The U19 team faced a fiercely competitive tournament, demonstrating resilience and skill across two action-packed days. On Day 1, they battled against St. Swithin’s, Worth School, Down House, Sherborne, and Marlborough College, securing two wins, one draw, and two losses—earning them a well-deserved place in Division 1.
Day 2 saw a remarkable performance, as the team stormed through the group stages with two wins and one loss, finishing second in their group. A commanding 7-2 victory over Haileybury in the last 16 showcased their attacking prowess. In the quarter-finals, they took an early lead against Putney High, holding a 1-0 advantage at halftime. However, Putney responded with two quick goals in the second half, ending our run in the competition. Finishing in the top eight in Division 1 is a fantastic achievement, and we commend the team for their exceptional efforts!
A huge congratulations to all our players and coaches for an outstanding tournament—your hard work, teamwork, and passion for the sport have made us all incredibly proud!
