Promoting Road Safety – From the Classroom to the Community

On Friday 5th September, we were delighted to welcome Louise Codman, Team Leader at Wirral Road Safety, to speak to our Sixth Form students as part of the Nicholls Lecture Series.

Louise’s talk focused on Young Drivers, a topic highly relevant to our Sixth Formers, many of whom are either learning to drive or already behind the wheel. Students explored the importance of safe driving, the dangers of speeding, and why sticking to the 20mph speed limit in our local area is so crucial. They also considered the very real consequences of failing to do so. Each student left with a copy of the Highway Code – a practical resource to support their learning and help keep them safe on the road.

This session built on the work of our younger pupils earlier this year, who took part in a powerful community initiative known as Kid’s Court. In June, our Junior pupils confronted speeding drivers outside school, offering them an alternative to fines and penalty points: face a panel of children and explain their actions.

Led by Wirral Council’s Road Safety Team in partnership with Merseyside Police, this initiative gave our young Travel Ambassadors the opportunity to hold drivers to account, ask challenging questions, and raise awareness of the dangers of speeding near schools. Many drivers left not only with a copy of the Highway Code, but also with plenty to reflect on – a testament to the confidence, composure, and impact of our pupils.

We are incredibly proud of how our students – from Juniors to Sixth Form – have engaged with such an important topic, championing road safety in both school and the wider community. Our sincere thanks go to Louise Codman and the Wirral Council Road Safety Team for their continued support and for delivering such an engaging and thought-provoking lecture.
