We are absolutely delighted to celebrate the remarkable success of our students in this year’s Frank Moran Young Writers Award, hosted by the prestigious Liverpool Athenaeum.
Congratulations to Joseph T, winner of the award, and Greta J, who was named runner-up.
The Frank Moran Young Writers Award invites young writers to submit 1,000–1,200 words of original prose — a short story, travel essay, or a piece inspired by something they feel passionate about. The judges look for writing that the author is truly proud of, whether serious or amusing.
Joseph’s winning piece, The Word, impressed the judges and secured him:
- Designation as Writer-in-Residence at The Athenaeum for one year
- A £500 prize
- Honorary Membership of The Athenaeum for one year
- An invitation (with his parents) to attend The Athenaeum Annual Dinner
- A £50 donation to our school library
The awards were announced at a reception at The Athenaeum on 25th February 2026.
Reflecting on his entry, Joseph shared that he had long held the idea for his story but had never committed it fully to paper. The competition gave him the opportunity to develop the piece, demonstrate his writing ability and gain valuable feedback as he looks towards publishing in the future.
Greta entered the competition after being intrigued by the opportunity it offered. Although she has been writing for some time, this was her first competition. Her stories explore the importance of human connection in a world where people are increasingly replaced by AI. She writes about how even brief interactions shape who we are, suggesting that how we treat others — often strangers — defines how we are remembered.
We are immensely proud of both students for their creativity, ambition and thoughtful writing. A wonderful achievement for them and for our school community
