Now in its fourth year, our community programme ‘Be inspired’ invites children from local primary schools to come and join in a programme packed with fun, learning and a lot of excitment…
By Mrs Hope, Teacher of Mathematics and Course Leader
This was our fourth year of running this exciting community course. ‘Be Inspired’ gives Year 5 children from primary schools across the Wirral new experiences and is designed to build confidence and help pupils prepare for secondary school.
Teachers and parents were invited to nominate children who would be invited to attend all four weekly sessions, during which they would get to try new subjects and activities, as well as building on the national curriculum supplementing the work done in primary schools. The lessons were led by teachers and supported by Sixth Form pupils, who acted as mentors for the younger children offering advice, assisting with exercises and providing inspiration for the students on the programme.
Over the course of the programme, pupils undertook sessions on public speaking and learnt some tips on writing and delivering speeches, which culminated in a prize giving ceremony where the speeches were given. Parents were invited to come and listen to their child’s speech and see for themselves the confidence the programme had instilled into the Years 5 speakers.
The speeches were brilliant. Asiyah, a local Year 5 student who attended the course remarked that; “I’ve loved this programme, it has been so much fun and also my confidence has grown” Isabelle said that “Be Inspired has inspired me to try new things and to be more confident”.
After the speeches, the students were awarded prizes for their commitment to the programme with special mentions for stand-out students who really relished the opportunity demonstrating enthusiasm and kindness along the way.
We were privileged to host this year’s students. We hope the children enjoyed their time at Birkenhead School.
